After many years working in the streets of Roma, the middle-aged prostitute Mamma Roma saves money to buy an upper-class apartment, a fruit stand and retires from prostitution. She brings her teenage son, Ettore, who was raised alone in the country, to live with her. Soon Ettore becomes her pride and joy. However, the boy that does not want to study or work, joins idle friends. Mamma Roma uses her best but limited efforts to straighten Ettore and make him an honest man. However, her past haunts her with tragic consequences.
Pasolini made his debut with Accattone (1961), was also a famous writer of his time, and a tireless debater at the heart of Italian politics and culture. He worked in a variety of ways on film narratives and forms, but his theory of "cinema of poetry" and the political situation in Italy have always been at the center of his films. Mamma Roma, like his debut film, is a work that reminds us of Italian neo-realism in terms of its form and was dedicated to Roberto Rossellini. Through the story of the reunion of a mother, who engages in prostitution, and her son, the director observes the inside of a miserable society being ready to criticize the socially underprivileged. Pasolini, who has proved that he is a true artist and poet not only in his works but also in his personal life, will celebrate his 100th birthday in 2022. [Sung MOON]
