Dowoo is running a motel with an elderly mother with dementia. One day, his mother goes missing. Winter is deepening, Dowoo suffers from a nightmare because he has not found his mother. Then one day, a young man named Hoseung, who looks like a questionable man, stays in the motel for a long time. Looking somewhat dangerous, Hoseung roams around Dowoo and watches him.
Drown, a psychological thriller film, opens with a huge view of Paroho Lake, which was once a popular tourist destination and is the place where some 20,000 North Korean soldiers who died during the Korean War were buried. Dowoo runs a sinking motel where he lives with his mother with dementia. As his mother calls him by ringing the bell all the time, and the guests committed suicide one after another in the motel rooms, his nerves are on edge. Even if he tries to sleep on his mother's tranquilisers, he becomes more anxious. Then, his mother suddenly disappears, and the villagers become suspicious of him. Moreover, Dowoo becomes even more confused as he becomes entangled with a hairdresser, a coffee shop girl, a friend from his hometown, and a mysterious man who suddenly comes to the motel. The film, which tells a story that blurs the boundaries between reality and fantasy, was presented in the Harbour Section of the 2022 IFF Rotterdam. [MOON Seok]
