Overview

A portrait of the Korean representative cinéast through his work—films and writings. “Dramatic irony” is a time travel to approach director Lee focusing on his nature and truth. Inspired by Peppermint Candy, the film travels back in time to his artistic origin, from the present, then on time as a writer, up to his childhood. It also tells the stories of the actors in his films and co-writer Oh Jung-mi about their collaborations. In addition, the film shows the presence of each location and the beginning of the great artist.

Review

It is a documentary about Lee Chang-dong with its world premiere at the JEONJU IFF. Alain Mazars who directed other documentaries on film directors including Atom Egoyan and Douglas Sirk took the megaphone. This is also the time and physical travel following Lee’s films. Lee explains about his latest long film Burning in Huamdong and Paju and his debut film Green Fish in Ilsan and Youngdeuongpo going backward of the time. It is quite interesting to listen to one of Korea’s representative directors in the filmmaking world. The film even goes to the places where he lived before becoming a director in an attempt to find his cinematic roots. The testimonies from the actors who worked with him also unveil his true colors.
