A landscape film comprised of nightscapes, drawings, and poems by the literati from the Joseon Dynasty.

*This film is a silent film.

Review

You might suspect there is a projection issue. Night Walk, the second film of director SOHN Koo-yong, has no sound at all. This experimental documentary develops by showing the nightscapes of a town. When moonlight or windows shine, adorable drawings are overlaid on the screen, followed by hand-written poems by the literati from the Joseon Dynasty. For instance, “The light of the sky and the clouds reflects in a mirror that is spread out in front of the yard. Towards dawn, the wind blows softly, joining the lucid fragrance with jade-colored spring water.” (‘Expressing Howonjeong’s Twelve Scenes’ Through Poetry’ from The Complete Works of Hak-bong by Kim Seong-il) poems like these appear faintly on the screen. While appreciating around 50 poems, including “Clean night air is hinted on the surface of the water, and the new full moon is unusually high and bright,” a quote from King Jeongjo’s lyrical poem in ‘Hongjae Calligraphy Collection,’ The Collection of Works - King Jeongjo’s writings, our head becomes clear. We lose ourselves in the quiet picturesque atmosphere as if we went for a walk in the middle of the night. Night Walk was screened at this year’s International Film Festival Rotterdam. (MOON Seok)
