THE MOTHER AND THE WHORE
Alexandre, a young and idle dilettant, lives with his lover, Marie, and strolls around Paris's Left Bank. One day, he meets Veronika, a young nurse. He begins an affair with Veronika without leaving Marie…
Much has been written and said about THE MOTHER AND THE WHORE: that it showed the dark side of the dreams of the revolution of May 68 and of the sexual revolutions that the era encouraged, and that it established a turning point within the history of French cinema post-Nouvelle Vague. THE MOTHER AND THE WHORE is not the last film in the filmography of French director Jean EUSTACHE, but it was his testament. Through a trio played by the now legendary actors Bernadette Lafont, Jean-Pierre Léaud, and Françoise Lebrun, the film portrays a time and its customs, but it also tells us about love and the difficulties that life as a couple entails. Jean EUSTACHE, a director who left no heirs, peeked dangerously into the abyss of romantic relationships and this film is a report of what he saw. 50 years after its release, presented here in a recently restored version, THE MOTHER AND THE WHORE remains an uncomfortable, controversial film and one of the greatest masterpieces that the history of cinema has ever created.
