Review

As is often the case with great directors' debuts, The Green Years(1963) marks the birth of a cineaste showing his unique talent and his thoughts on cinema. The actors were not well-known at the time but later became legendary stars. This low-budget film is a significant turning point in Portuguese cinema, marking the departure from the past for Cinema Novo. Like young directors in other countries in the early 1960s, ROCHA took to the streets to document the lives of his protagonists. Through the tragic love story of two young people from the provinces, the film depicts the most intimate places in Lisbon and everyday life in the city that have not been noticed in mainstream cinema. Later, the streets and areas in the movie are re-examined through Where Is This Street? or With No Before And After, co-directed by João Pedro RODRIGUES and João Rui GUERRA DA MATA, and introduced together at the JEONJU IFF this year.
