Where Is This Street? or With No Before And After
From our window, one can see a set of the film The Green Years directed by Paulo Rocha in 1963. This was our starting point: guided by Rocha's gaze, we look back at the places of that film. The successive geological, urbanistic and social strata of Lisbon, besieged by the pandemic that interrupted the shooting, are drawn out in front of our camera, like a contemporary jazz improvisation from a score written in 1963.
In the book What Will Be Of Cinema?, published by the JEONJU IFF in 2021, the filmmakers João Rui GUERRA DA MATA and João Pedro RODRIGUES told us about the shooting of this film, interrupted by the pandemic, through a series of pictures. And they said that it was a meditation on the contemporary city of Lisbon based on the film The Green Years(1963) and its locations. The Green Years by Paulo ROCHA (for the audience to fully savor the connections, the screening timetable is arranged so the audience can watch The Green Years before the first screening of Where Is This Street? or With No Before And After), is a film that marked a turning point in the history of Portuguese cinema between the past and the new. It is not strange, that long after, other representatives -or heirs- of that modernity, pay this poetic tribute to a city, a time and a film that marked their lives and their ways of understanding cinema.
