Overview

From 1965 to 1983, Hyères hosted the Festival International du Jeune Cinéma. Yves-Marie Mahé tells its story through archival materials, unfolding a dazzling fresco of splendors and miseries filled with stars and nobodies while the main event loses itself in, and to the zeitgeist. A cautionary tale.

*The film will be screened with A Dream as in Colours of the Cinephile JEONJU section.

Review

The history of cinema is not only written by the great names known to all. Many anonymous heroes also participate in it. As were those responsible for the Jeune Cinéma film festival, which existed from 1962 to 1983, with changes of venues included. The documentary by director Yves-Marie MAHÉ tells us the history of the festival through archive images that not only reveal its rich history, full of today's famous and respected names, such as Chantal Akerman, Leos Carax, Philip Garrel, and Marguerite Duras, but also of several films and directors that time has forgotten or left hidden in the archives of history. Who remembers films like Pop'game (1968), La Folle de Toujane (1974) or a director like Jacques Robiolles today? Perhaps the most interesting thing about this documentary is the proposition of a theory that we always suspect: there are other film histories and they can still be written. The documentary Jeune Cinéma is a first step in that direction. Long live film festivals! (Sung MOON)
