Holding her 16mm camera, an optical prosthesis for a 20th-century stroller, Agnès Varda filmed 42nd Street in NYC in 1967, filming crowds of passers-by to the beat of the Doors. To get lost with her in the lights, bodies, faces, and chaos of New York, overcrowded and multi-ethnic, there was Pier Paolo Pasolini.
*The film will be screened with GODARD CINEMA of the Cinephile JEONJU "Jean-Luc Cinéma Godard (1930 ~ 2022)" section.
Agnès VARDA relocated to the United States in the late 1960s and directed several films depicting the social situation around the last days of flower power, a symbol of nonviolent resistance, heralding even darker times. At that time, Pier Paolo Pasolini was also in NYC. This brief meeting, filmed with a 16mm camera by Varda, presents an unforgettable moment of sympathy between the two directors. This short film was discovered by Cineteca di Bologna last year and premiered at the film festival Il Cinema Ritrovato. (Sung MOON)
