Review

Koyaanisqatsi is one of the great visionary films of the 20th century; an elegiac, symphonic portrait of the late 20th-century planet damaged irreparably by the inexorable forces of capitalist industry and blind progress. Godfrey Reggio’s first feature film brought him into a collaborative partnership with minimalist composer Philip Glass, whose haunting score gives incredible force to Reggio’s Avant-garde editing and the spellbinding images invented by maverick cinematographer Ron Fricke. Koyaanisqatsi, a film without dialogue, tells its story through the force of its images and music, pulling the viewer into a mind-expanding, almost narcotic, but ultimately revelatory experience. The Harvard Film Archive archives the films and related documents from the Institute for Regional Education, founded by directors and the media company the directors established. The 35mm print screened at the JEONJU IFF will be donated as a gift to the Korean Film Archive. (Haden Guest) *On April 29, the film will be screened with The Garden of Earthly Delights of the Cinephile JEONJU, Guest Cinephile: Harvard Film Archive section
