OUR PRESIDENT is a documentary by LEE Changjae that depicts the late President Roh Moohyun's election as the presidential candidate of the Millennium Democratic Party in 2002 and scenes from his presidency through testimonies of people who knew him. The film initially aimed to examine the success and failure of politician Roh Moohyun and to demonstrate that they were not solely his own but also those of Korean society. However, the director shifted his focus to the citizens during the filming and editing process. Despite being a remarkable politician, Roh struggled for a long time to overcome regional hostility. After losing several elections, he finally became the presidential candidate in the 2002 primary election. This dramatic turnaround can be attributed to the voluntary sacrifices of citizens who supported his cause of eliminating regionalism. Through a reflection on Roh's merits and demerits, the director implies that the significance of the former president's legacy is deeply related to the level of civic maturity in Korea. The documentary also includes various recollections of the personal legacy behind his political career, evoking a range of emotions. (KIM Young-Jin)
