Review

At first glance, a store on the outskirts of Moscow, Russia, looks just like any ordinary 24-hour convenience store. Still, illegal migrant workers from Central Asia live in small rooms in its basement. The owner exploits them like slaves by using their desperate circumstances. Even sexual abuse takes place openly. The protagonist, Mukhabbat, endures this life under agonizing circumstances to protect her child, to whom she gave birth in there. She eventually escapes to Uzbekistan, her home country, which is no better than where she was. Director Michael BORODIN from Uzbekistan came up with the idea for this film from an actual event in a convenience store in Russia. However, Convenience Store doesn’t show any sign of exposing or accusing the assailant. Instead, the film employs a strategy to shake viewers by portraying the exploitation of migrant workers and their lives in a stifling rhythm. (MOON Seok)
