Review

Winny is a collaborative work created by young Japanese director MATSUMOTO Yusaku and actor Higashide Masahiro and is based on the Winny incident that created a sensation in Japanese society in the early 2000s. Winny is peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing software without a specific server, developed in 2002 by Kaneko Isamu, an assistant professor at the University of Tokyo. Winny acquired immense popularity, but the illegal uploading and downloading of films, music, and games through this software became a social issue. The Japanese police arrested those illegally uploaded files and charged Kaneko Isamu with assisting copyright infringement. He is not aware of the world outside computer technology and is in a situation where he might become a victim of prosecutors and the police. Winny not only attempts to prove his innocence through heated legal battles in court but also criticizes mainstream Japanese society that tends to suppress exceptional, so-called standout people.
