Gyeongju is a turning point for director ZHANG Lu. He has made realistic films with heavy subjects, including Grain in Ear, Tang Poetry, Hyazgar, Iri, and Dooman River going back and forth between China and Korea, and he finally finds some breathing space with Gyeongju. Set in Gyeongju, a city of graves, where the shadow of death is cast across the city, the film tells a story of life and love. Unlike his other films, it features beautiful scenery and a strong sense of humor. A considerable amount of humor in Gyeongju is created thanks to Bek Hyunjin, who plays Professor Park. He expresses an intellectual's false consciousness and servility through natural acting of his own style. (MOON Seok)
