Review

Director JANG Gun-ho's Shit Can is a cinematic depiction featuring the agony of artists living in the harsh capitalist era. Mr. Buda, who writes poetry, and Mr. Mime, who plays mimes, arrive at Ganghwa Island after receiving a text message from experimental musician Hanjoo whom they have known for a long time. The name of the place where Hanjoo informed them that the last performance of the band Bulgasari, the band they played together with, will be held is Shit Can. While grabbing people and asking where the Shit Can is, they meet Su-na, an actress, and Hanna, a writer, who came to film on YouTube. In this road movie set on Ganghwa Island, the four men and women keep conflict with each other, but in the end, they share the agony of living as artists. In that sense, this film is an extension of director JANG Gun-ho's previous film MIMIST, which showed the artistic world of Korea's first-generation pantomimist Yu Jin Gyu. The fact that Jeon Booda and Lee Jeonghun, who appeared in MIMIST, played the lead roles is also a similarity between the two films. In the second half of the film, Lee Hanju, who is actually working as an experimental musician, shows an avant-garde performance, which is the climax of the film. The presence of actor Ko Kwanjae, who played multiple roles, also shines bright. (MOON Seok)
