A joke story of two men who met after a long time in Jeju Island. Their bland jokes gradually become more secretive that are repeated like serious jokes, like a Mobius strip. The literary style dialogue, the minimal screen composition and angles, and the calm acting style remind of a play of the absud. The endless jokes they continue are the struggles of modern people who want to be comforted.
The film Endless Joke was first introduced in 2011 during a concert by musician Jang Younggyu. The story revolves around two men, a famous former poet now living in isolation on Jeju Island and a younger actor. While they engage in constant conversations for quite some time, it remains unclear whether their story is real or a joke. The poet claims to enjoy a leisurely life, while the actor says he came to rest while meeting the poet. Although their conversations often reveal bitter feelings deep inside and even turn violent, they ultimately end up in-jokes. Through their stories, viewers can sense the pain and loneliness of artists. The performances of veteran actors such as Park Hae-il and OH Kwang-rok make this film worth watching. (MOON Seok)
