Review

Nine years after the tragic Sewol ferry incident, it still affects us profoundly. While people consider it an ongoing case, few directors have tried to deal with tragedy in fiction films. Unlike films that depicted people around survivors, such as Birthday and Jo Pil-ho: The Dawning Rage. Pamir, directed by Omuel, known for Jiseul, Nostalgia, and Bbongdol, maybe the first attempt to confront the incident head-on. The film portrays the survivors of the disaster and those around them, examining the nightmarish aftermath of the disaster. The film is divided into three parts, with Pamir having the same setting as the 2017 short film of the same title. It features Seongcheol, a student rescued at the scene, as the main character. The second part, The Sinner, follows a father who lost his daughter in the disaster, while the third part, A bolt from blue, depicts a meeting between the girlfriend and mother of a boy who could not escape the ferry. The film takes viewers deep beneath the cold and rough water through its three parts. The film features a talented cast of actors, blending young actors such as Jang Dongyoon, Lee Juseung, and Ahn Soyo, along with veteran actors such as Kim Minhyeok from Bbongdol and Nam Gwona from the short Pamir.
