In a luxurious seaside villa, a young woman of modest origins finds herself in the company of a strange family: a very wealthy father of no renown, his extravagant wife, his daughter, an ambitious woman, a rebellious teenager, and their creepy maid. Someone is lying. From suspicions to outright lies, a mystery grows... and evil lurks.
The fish cannery worker, Stéphene, is exhausted from her hard life. When she is cornered and has no plan, she meets her wealthy father, who had abandoned her. Unlike her father, Serge, a benign-looking businessman, his new wife Louise, their daughter George, and their rebellious granddaughter, Jeanne, seem to be troublemakers and want to push her out of their luxurious villa. Stéphene desperately tries to fit into this present-day noble class for her own survival, so she pretends to be a fish cannery owner rather than a low-level worker, leading the situation to slip out of her control. The Origin of Evil touches the present-day class conflict and family dilemmas, unfolding an ever-changing story with twists and turns and revealing an unexpected female solidarity drama. Laura Calamy, who played the protagonist in Full Time (2021), the closing film of the JEONJU IFF last year, takes on the role of Stéphene. (MOON Seok)
