Overview

In 1918, a young woman on the brink of madness pursues stardom in a desperate attempt to escape the drudgery, isolation and lovelessness of life on her parents' farm.

Review

Ti WEST, director of Pearl is one of the most notable directors in the modern horror film industry. He has gained steady attention since his debut feature The House of the Devil, described as a complete restoration of '80s slasher films. When he released the slasher film X in March and Pearl in September last year, he became hot property. Both films have Mia Goth as the protagonist, and the stories are on similar context lines, so they attract even more attention. Pearl is called a prequel to X, but it is entirely different in every aspect, from the description of characters to the style. Set in the time the 1918 influenza epidemic, also known as the Spanish Flu, caused world panic near the end of the World War I, Pearl focuses on the fervent desire and obsession of Pearl, who wants to get out of the country town and become a Hollywood musical star. As a horror film that concentrates on the protagonist Pearl, the movie's highlight is Mia Goth's outstanding performance.
