PIXINGUINHA, AN AFFECTIONATE MAN
Biopic on the life and times of Brazil’s musical icon Alfredo Vianna Jr, Pixinguinha(1897-1973), the father of Brazilian Popular Music. A black man, the grandson of slaves, a genius much ahead of his time. His importance was only recognized many years later by young musicians of Bossa Nova like Tom Jobim, João Gilberto, and Caetano Veloso. His most important song, Carinhoso, is Brazil's most recorded song ever. Starring Seu Jorge.
When talking about choro and samba, the Brazilian music that preceded Bossa Nova, it’s impossible not to mention Pixinguinha. He was born in 1897 as the son of a flutist, he learned to play the flute from an early age and was a gifted musician, writing his first composition at the age of fourteen and making his first recording when he was sixteen. From the 1920s onwards, he was based in Paris, France, where he represented Brazilian music. In Paris, he combined jazz with Brazilian music. Upon returning to his homeland, he created many of the most iconic pieces of modern Brazilian music, including Carinhoso, which is still a staple at samba festivals and is cherished by the Brazilian people. This is a biopic about the life and music of Pixinguinha, who was Brazil’s representative popular composer until he died in 1973, and it is filled with upbeat music that will make you move your shoulders throughout.
