Stella in Love
For Stella, it’s her final year. But she doesn’t care! That year, she discovers the famous Parisian clubs, the 80s and its crazy nights. Her friends are studying, her father has left and her mother is depressed. That year will decide her whole life. She pretends not to think about it...
The sequel to Stella, which was screened at the Venice International Film Festival 2008, follows the story of a young girl’s final year of high school, six years after Stella’s last year of elementary school. Stella is a high school student who should be thinking about her career path, but she pretends it’s not on her mind. While her friends are only studying, her father has left her for another woman, her mother is suffering from depression, Stella experiences a crazy night when she discovers dancer André’s dazzling moves at Les Bains Douches, a legendary club in 1980s Paris. Stella dreams of majoring in dance at university, but her mother opposes the idea because Stella needs to earn money. What does Stella look like as an adult? The issues of loneliness within family and social marginalization in her previous film still surround Stella in this film, making her coming of age even more difficult. Sylvie VERHEYDE’s direction stands out, as she captures the retro vibes of the early 1980s clubs, hairstyles, and costumes. (CHUN Jinsu)
