The story of how design duo Hipgnosis, Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell, became London’s most hip album design studio. From the intensity of youthful friendships evolved a vital and symbiotic collaboration that made them into the cultural icons that we recognize today.
Whether you’re a Pink Floyd fan or not, if you’re even a little bit interested in music from the 1970s and 1980s, you’ve probably seen the jackets for albums like The Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here. However, not many people have heard of the design group called Hipgnosis, which designed the jackets. Hipgnosis is a design group formed by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell, who first designed record jackets for friends and musicians David Gilmour and Syd Barrett, who later formed Pink Floyd, and went on to create jackets for Pink Floyd’s albums, as well as countless others such as Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney, and Wings. Unlike today, when everything was done by hand, Hipgnosis weren’t afraid to take adventurous risks, even if they were expensive to produce. As a result, in a time when vinyl has been revitalized, they are highlighted again as the ‘hipster among hipsters’. This documentary shows the innovative designers who were ahead of their time, along with the stunning music of the musicians of their time, and the amazing stories behind them. (CHUN Jinsu)
