Last Things

USA, Portugal, France 2023 50min DCP Color/B&W feature Experimental Documentary G
Overview

From before the beginning until after the end; evolution and extinction from the point of view of rocks and various future others. The geo-biosphere is introduced as a place of evolutionary possibility, where humans disappear, but life endures.

Review

In the extensive and exciting filmography of director Deborah STRATMAN we can find, among others, the following themes: freedom, surveillance, public discourse, levitation, raptors, comets, evolution, space, extinction, the exodus, the sisterhood, and faith. In her new feature film, perhaps the most ambitious of her career, her interests are not far behind. Last Things talks about many topics and raises so many questions and theories that it sounds almost impossible to think that everything she offers and shows us has entered in just 50 minutes. Using the science fiction novels written by J.-H. Rosny, and other texts by renowned writers, thinkers, biologists, and scientists, including Roger Callois, Clarice Lispector, Lynn Margulis, Robert Hazen, and Donna Haraway, Last Things propose, among many other things, an evolutionary possibility in which humans disappear but life endures.
