Overview

A shocking murder that shook Soviet society in the seventies and exposed the reverse side of Soviet morality.

Review

On a winter's night, an elderly couple is shot dead, and their wheelchair-bound only son, Sasha, crawls through a snowy field to report this to the police. As the investigation starts, his friend Kolya is arrested as the prime suspect, and the case appears to be settled, but the detective is unconvinced. The victims look like an ordinary family on the surface, but when Sasha's older sister died aged one, his traumatized mother raised him like a daughter, and his father went along with this. The parents' abnormal state of mind results in their own death and another tragic event. Olexandr ZHOVNA is an acclaimed writer and screenwriter who has also worked as a teacher at a boarding school for children with special educational needs. Using his outstanding abilities in directing this film, he reveals the tragic life of Sasha, both victim, and perpetrator. Sending applause to the strength of the Ukrainian film industry, as this high-quality thriller, with its superb acting and historical research, was made despite the ongoing war. (CHUN Jinsu)
