For a 9-minute long-take, a couple who have been together for 5 years have a conversation. The man is an aspiring actor, and the woman is a filmmaker. The man says he wants to write an autobiographical screenplay. To create the film, he suggests they use the money they had been saving up for a trip the woman had been excited about. This isn’t the first time the woman has rejected such a proposition. Where does this ongoing argument leave their relationship? Then, the scene changes into black and white. Is this from the film they ended up creating? Is it a glimpse into their past? Is it an imagined, different time? The film sparks tension and curiosity from the gap between the given information and what the viewer can see onscreen. By placing the two ambiguous worlds side by side, Blow a Candle, Make a wish has a unique ability to suck viewers into a deep analysis of the words, gazes, and actions of the characters.
