There are numerous ways to recount a history. Foremost by Night uses cinematic languages such as images and sounds to bring collision into the elements that cannot easily be connected, attempting to evoke unexpected sensations. Its narrative structure makes it unclear what genre this movie falls into. In addition, the director deliberately chose not to explode emotions even at the deeply touching moment when two mothers and one son face each other. The use of diverse frame formats, inspired by graphic novels and 19th-century traditions, deserves to give Víctor Iriarte the title of an inventor and filmmaker. Although we cannot name his intention, he discovered a new storytelling method via various experiments. He tries to convey the air of oppression imposed on the society under Francoist dictatorship by delicately touching the characters, including the one played by Lola Dueñas, who starred in Pedro Almodóvar's films with her solid screen presence, like gently pressing piano keys. Trusting that movies can open a new space, the director portrays the uncanny yet beautiful truth and the history we live through and have to face via changes people go through. (Sung MOON)
