Sonata of Wave
Wanan, the utopia of surfing enthusiasts, is a place rarely known. Dongbin has opened a surfing shop by the sea, which welcomes and receives different guests. Xiao Fang hides the secrets of the past, Yuan Yong escapes from his parents' arrangements, and Yang Fan looks for the future direction into the unknown. They meet and burst out ambiguous and sincere feelings, illuminating each other with a faint light. Will their secrets be forever submerged by the sea, or will they remain in their different versions of their memories?

Last year, director Ma Xue visited Jeonju with the spicy love story White River (2023). Her latest film, Sonata of Wave, seems like a cheerful story of young people enjoying surfing at first glance. However, drilling into the inner story of male protagonist Xiao Fang may tell a deeper narrative. After losing a beloved friend, Xiao Fang was trapped in guilt, and it caused him intense pain. He tries to escape from the past and seek a new life on a sunny surfing beach. Besides, Yuan Yong and Yang Fan, a man and woman of his age, ignited a new love in Xiao Fang’s life. However, as always, at the end of love, there is not only hope and joy but also pain and wounds. Sonata of Wave shares similarities with White River in that the three main characters have the same name, and all live in a confined space. However, because of the story of youthful characters, it is brighter, bubblier, and lighter than White River. Dong Bin, the owner of a surfing rental shop who is closely connected with Xiao Fang’s past, is played by actor Lee Kang-Sheng, giving the role even more weight. (MOON Seok)
