KIX
KIX is a cinematic odyssey through a boy’s coming of age. Over 12 years, it follows Sanyi from the playfulness of childhood to the conformity and grimness of adulthood. Through a lens both personal and political, we witness a rarely seen portrait of an impoverished working-class family in modern day Budapest.

Director Dávid Mikulán roamed the streets of Budapest on his skateboard with a camera in hand from a young age. While attending the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, he took videos of people on the streets who caught his eye. That was when he met Sanyi, an 8-year-old boy playing with a ball. Neighbors Dávid and Sanyi grew close thanks to Dávid’s skateboard, and for 10 years after that, Dávid captured Sanyi and his family with his camera. Dávid spent time with Sanyi and his young friends as they ventured, played games, and fought on the streets, fully capturing Sanyi’s fierce younger days. Thanks to the trust and friendship between them, Dávid was able to capture the children and the family’s changes of emotions as well. Sanyi’s coming-of-age story is incredibly charming, but a rash act brings an unexpected development, pushing Sanyi into adulthood. Surprisingly, even during this time of change, Dávid’s camera remains calm. (CHUN Jinsu)
