The film tells three stories. In one, a son and mother wait for the father’s return. In another, a woman meets a man, and they exchange stories about their hometown. The third follows a man returning to his hometown to welcome the spirits of the dead. While they appear independent, these narratives subtly speak to viewers about the themes of home and migration, departure and return. Uwagawa Hikaru’s debut film Ulysses not only recalls Homer’s epic but also evokes the work of Irish writer James Joyce. Though the worlds of these two authors—one classical, the other modernist—seem at odds, perhaps it is at their intersection that we discover the unique universe this film creates. (Sung MOON)
