It's said that Georges Méliès accidentally discovered the jump cut editing technique when his camera momentarily malfunctioned, causing a bus to suddenly transform into a hearse. In essence, film is a medium that captures moving imagery, yet also one that loses it in an instant. All The Ways We Disappear examines how film, a medium born in the modern era, shapes the bodies of its subjects while devouring the very magic that makes the body suddenly disappear from the screen. By looking back at “my own” body doing gymnastics on the playground in elementary school, the director investigates the way the film medium and the state structure bodies. This work dissects bodies entangled with the medium and memory, while poetically articulating the imagination trying to break free from a single body. (KIM Byeonggyu | Film Critic)
