Born in Tehran in 1950, Googoosh was Iran's most iconic pop singer and a film star during the 1970s. However, after the Islamic Revolution, she was placed under house arrest and banned from singing for 20 years, and her multiple marriages all ended in divorce. Eventually, as government surveillance loosened, she was able to make a dramatic escape from Iran and return to performing. Her concerts were filled with fellow Iranian immigrants who had no choice to leave their homeland. But they don' t flock to her performances just for nostalgia. They come solidarity—to honor the artists silenced or executed during the Islamic Revolution and the women who perished in the so-called "Hijab Revolution". The life story and music of an artist who remains a powerful symbol of resistance and the fight for human rights across generations unfold through rich archival footage. (CHUN Jinsu)
