The Republic of Artsakh, located between Armenia and Azerbaijan, existed from 1991 to 2023. It declared independent after the collapse of the Soviet Union but was never internationally recognized and was widely seen as a puppet state of Armenia, with Armenians making up 95% of its population. After losing the war to Azerbaijan in 2020, the republic was dissolved, and most of its people fled to Armenia. Filming began before the war, originally meant to explore the uncertain future faced by four women living in Artsakh. But as conflict erupted, the focus shifted to their desperate struggles amidst the war. Though the film primarily presents the Armenian perspective, the strength and resilience of these four women leave a lasting impression. (CHUN Jinsu)
