Watanabe Gisuke, a retired professor of French literature, lives alone in a traditional family home passed down to him. His quiet days unfold by preparing breakfast, grinding beans for coffee, submitting magazine articles, shopping for groceries, and cooking again in the evening. But this peaceful rhythm is disrupted when he begins receiving strange, ominous emails with subject lines like “Enemy from the North,” “Refugees and Social Unrest,” and “Warnings About Martial Law Rumors.” His editorial is canceled. His favorite neighborhood bar shuts down. Paranoia and dread start to take hold to the point where he decides to write a his last will and attempt suicide. What is the source of his fear? Has a “teki (enemy)” truly arrived? Where does his imagination end and where does reality begin? Shot in stylish black and white and underscored by sparse and discreet sound design, the film creates an atmosphere of uncertainty and emotional fragility. And at its center is Nagatsuka Kyozo's absolutely captivating performance as Watanabe. (CHUN Jinsu)
