Recently restored The Declic Years made its debut in the Classics section of the Cannes Film Festival. In this documentary, photographer Raymond Depardon journeys through his archives and memories spanning from 1957 to 1977, cinematically reconstructing the years that plunged French society into shock with vivid testimonies. As both photographer and filmmaker, Depardon personally guides us through his photographs and personal documents. The film offers a chronological exploration of Depardon's two-decade career, revisiting formative moments from his professional beginnings and successes to his periods of doubt, all the while constructing a portrait of France's evolving social landscape. Journalist Gérard Lefort aptly describes Depardon's approach: “Raymond Depardon is an image harvester rather than an image hunter, a gleaner rather than a predator... Behind any camera, whether photographic or cinematographic, he never loses a crumb. In fact, he catches all these crumbs, these situations, landscapes, bodies and faces, transforming them into a vision of the world.” (Sung MOON)
