Peter travels to America and after an eventful investigation he finally finds his father and his new family. The reunion brings plenty of experiences and teaches several lessons to both son and father.

Review

The Hungarian director Gyorgy Palfi’s sixth feature film His Master’s Voice is a SF dystopian film based on one family’s dark history. Its production scale greatly increased compared to his previous work. The main protagonist Peter is trying to find his roots after the disappearance of his father who was a prominent Hungarian mathematician in the 1980s. Questioning everything, Peter comes to the States and slowly finds the truth of his father’s disappearance as he searches through the mysterious event "The Mystery of Colorado" in 1984 which his father was involved. As one gets closer to the center of the mystery and unraveling clues, the boundary line between reality and fantasy becomes thinner. Adapted from Stanislaw Lem’s 1968 novel, this film is a collage of science fiction, family drama, and fake documentary expressing Gyorgy Palfi’s sense of style. In the film, criticism toward the Cold War and focusing on the dark side of the evolution of science and technology emphasized in the original novel, meets with the avant-garde style of Palfi as expressed in his previous work. DIRECTOR
Gyorgy PALFI

The Hungarian director Gyorgy Palfi was internationally noted for his debut film Hukkle (2002). Created in a silent film style, Hukkle refrains from using any dialogue and conveys imagery through the rhythm of the screen. Taxidermia (2006), a film about a bizarre family, was invited to the Un Certain Regard at the Cannes. His Final Cut: Ladies And Gentlemen (2012) stimulated the cinephilic sensibility in an extracted film or essay film form. Palfi engaged with Jeonju IFF as he directed Free Fall (2014) for the Jeonju Cinema Project. This film oscillates between SF, horror, melodrama and sitcom, raising questions about the concept of normality as it portrays the mysterious situations a woman experiences as she jumps from the roof of a building. His recent film His Master's Voice (2018) is an SF film tracing the secret of the protagonist’s missing father.
