Overview

A Match chronicles the experiences of a young woman, Savita, yearning to determine her own future in a world where patriarchal traditions deprive women of agency and arranged marriage is presented as the only option for self-betterment.

Review

A Match confronts the patriarchy of the traditional marriage system in India. To choose a bride, the suitors visit the bride-to-be's house for an "interview" to ask various questions, ranging from the girl's education, her mother's heritage, and precisely how tall she is, among others. Savita's father also follows the custom of marrying off his daughter, thinking she will soon pass the prime age for marriage. However, Savita is considered dark-skinned, short, and probably too assertive to leave a positive impression. In the third year of the Sociology BA program, she cares more about her studies and secretly admires her professor. Her marriage prospects seem dire, and her family finances go downhill. Can she find a match? Contrary to the convention where male suitors ask questions, we see in the first scene where female suitors ask various questions to male candidates. The first scene, which is almost like the director's vision, and the compelling last scene render us hope—this practice may one day change, and situations may improve. (Sung MOON)
