Review

There is a beauty in observing animals. It owes itself to the sense of freedom that comes from the absence of any political or business calculations and the inability to communicate in the same language. A family lives in a rural Czech village, where they farm their land alongside various types of animals. There are no major incidents here, no experiences of joy or frustration, yet what we see seems to represent the most essential aspects of life. We are presented with the moments of everyday life and labor—the things that we lose sight of in our compulsive pursuit of the new, the new concepts we have to master so as not to be left behind in contemporary society, the increasingly extreme nature of political situations, and the technological advancements that have accelerated change. This is the first feature directed by Astrid van Nimwegen, a media artist who has taken up residence in a modified van as she focuses her work on the relationships between human and non-human beings. Viewers can also enjoy the ending credits, where they can see the names of the animal cast members that appeared. (Sung MOON)
