Overview

A being from the beyond returns to Chile in 2019, embodied in a worker who dreams of social upheaval. Viral videos intertwine with fiction to narrate the experiences of a polarized country that wanders between drama and absurdity, illusion and failure.

Review

In 2019, large-scale anti-government demonstrations erupted in Chile, touched off by a hike in subway fares. Some members of the public took it upon themselves at the time to block the streets and create a situation where people had to get out of their cars and dance before they could pass by. The uniqueness of this film does not only lie in its political message, though. Its significance is in the new approach it presents for creating a story. The structure is based on a sort of science fiction scenario, telling what happens when an unidentified being arrives in Chile with dreams of reforming a society ravaged by neoliberalism. The narrative was created by assembling portions taken from the torrent of information presented on video-sharing platforms. A few questions end up being raised: Can short-form videos be art? Can a film be made simply through online word of mouth? How should the circulating images be used? This is a film that boldly raises a debate about the languages and experiments of film. (Sung MOON)
