Review
At least part of the story told in this film is true. At the height of his career as a drug lord, Pablo Escobar had a dream in which he owned his own zoo. At his request, the most exotic animals from around the world were taken from their homes and relocated deep into the Colombian jungle. As Escobar’s drug-smuggling empire collapsed, the creatures ended up being abandoned. Using this true story as a jumping-off point, the director imagines a scenario where a surviving hippopotamus named Pepe shares his story with the audience, as the film shows his past, his struggles, and his feelings of sadness and nostalgia. From the life of Pepe, the work creates a genuine tale of adventure, making use of the narrative and formal possibilities of film. (Sung MOON)
