Review

Early 2000s in Los Angeles, Hayoung is a lonely 16-year-old Korean-American girl who lives in a small apartment with her mother and sister. Her father who is in temperate separation with mother sells carpet for living, tries to stay cheerful in front of Hayoung. She also enjoys the time with him once in a while. On the other hand, there is tension between the relationship with her mother who struggles to pay for Hayoung's after school lessons. After all, her father returns to Korea and Hayoung's study also struggles. Personal crisis factors like the unstable relationship between parents and children entering puberty in an low-income immigrant family shows anxiety of not knowing when and what will happen. Director Shelly Yo carefully describes various situations and characters' personalities with this debut feature film. In particular, Ji-young Yoo in the role of Hayoung and Abin Andrews as her mother make us look forward to their next work. (CHUN Jinsu)
