Filmmaker Ruth Beckermann, who has offered her distinct perspective and questions on Austria’s past and present, has laid her eyes on a school in the Favoriten district in Vienna. A classical documentary, the film unveils the lives of immigrants against the backdrop of contemporary global realities, depicted through the interactions between students and teachers in a classroom. The mother tongue of 60 percent of Vienna’s elementary school students is not German due to high immigration rates, and when we include their families, it is clear that a substantial portion of society is striving to adapt to the new social culture. Cultural clashes emerge not only between indigenous people and immigrants but also within individuals grappling with adapting to cultural changes. The film poses questions about navigating cultural and educational conflicts arising from moments of learning, teaching, acceptance, and resistance. (Sung MOON)
