Review
While music and songs have played important roles in Pedro Costa’s recent films, they have been as front and center as in this one. This brief yet powerful short narrates the story of three young sisters separated after a volcanic eruption in Cabo Verde, voiced by singers Elizabeth Pinard, Alice Costa, and Karyna Gomes. This film is the result of multifaceted collaboration between Petro Costa and Os Músicos do Tejo (The Musicians of the River Tagus), the Portuguese music group dedicated to preserving traditional village music. Born in Lisbon, he left his course of studies in History to attend classes taught by the poet and filmmaker António Reis at the Lisbon Film School. His most recent film, the short The Daughters of Fire, was presented in the Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival 2023.
