Review

Alone in a remote Canadian forest, Nina joins a group of five white men gathered for a bachelor and hunting party. While the initial setup of Hunting Daze might suggest a predictable storyline, it completely diverges from that expectation. Nina integrates into the group through tests and promises, or at least that is how it appears. The story truly begins with the arrival of Dudos, a black man, to the group. The order within this male gathering, seen as fair to both Nina, a woman, and Dudos, of a different race, starts to crumble due to an accidental incident, thrusting them into confusion. One notable aspect of this film is its realistic depiction of hypocrisy and false consciousness within the male group without exaggerating or revealing outrightly. Nina seems to adopt masculine traits to fit into the male-dominated group, while Dudos is seen as evidence of the men’s tolerance. Canadian director Annick Blanc skillfully explores the issues of race, gender, and class in this debut feature. The dynamic scenes set to the song "Happy Together" in the latter part make it impossible not to recognize her cinematic talent. (MOON Seok)
