Review

There is no other way to describe director Ryoo Seungwan’s debut film Die Bad (2000) other than as a myth. As a Cinekid, with only passion for film and no relevant formal education, Ryoo learnt to direct while working on the productions of director Park Chan-wook, Park Ki-Hyung, and Kwak Kyung-taek, and made his first short film, Rumble (1999) using the scraps of Bad Movie (1997), with a budget of 3.8 million KRW. Then he gradually made 3 more short films before eventually completing the omnibus feature film, Die Bad. This film created a syndrome by attracting 80,000 viewers nationwide, thanks to the vivid tension, explosive action scenes, and the appearance of actor, Ryoo Seungbum, who is still amazing to watch, even now. Die Bad is the root that allowed Ryoo to move through action films and become a master of diverse genres, including thrillers and period dramas. It is also nice to see the performances of the younger Jung Jae-yeong, Im Won-hee, and Ahn Gil-kang, and also cinematographer, Chung Chung-hoon, as a car center employee, and director Jang Kun-jae as a friend of Sang-hwan, played by Ryoo Seungbum.
