Hideaway follows a boy struggling to escape the grip of fate. Sunoh, a high schooler, has long resented his father for the abuse he inflicted on Sunoh's mother throughout his childhood. But when his father, a firefighter, dies in the line of duty and is hailed as a hero, the irony plunges Sunoh into even greater turmoil. To him, "the manhole," first introduced by his older sister, becomes either an exit or a hideout, a way to break free from his father's violence. Symbolically, the manhole can be seen as a place where something buried deep within Sunoh lies dormant. The lingering curse of violence that still binds him lurks within the manhole and, at some point, surges up. With the help of his girlfriend Hee-ju, Sunoh seems to move past the abuse, but the fact that her brother-in-law is a migrant worker complicates his situation further. Hideaway illustrates how cruel fate can be through the story of a boy whose life unravels in the worst possible way, even though he's made no wrong choices. (MOON Seok)
