This film traces the history of human-chicken interactions and focuses on the present state of chickens and other marginalised beings. It is a story of ultimate failure for those who fight against the system of ecological annihilation, but also about overcoming pessimism, standing in solidarity, and doing what we can.

Pure intuition is essential for reaching insight in life. Birds Who Lived Home - Where Did You All Go? presents viewers with fresh perspectives by exploring relationships between chickens (poultry), social minorities, and individuals who find hope in human-nature connections rather than social systems. Through a visual journey spanning from chickens depicted in Joseon Dynasty paintings to animals featured in contemporary art, the film challenges our attitudes toward them. Chickens lost their ability to fly when humans domesticated them for food, and as we have engineered livestock systems to maximize egg production, we have ceased recognizing these creatures as “birds” at all. The director expands on this observation, suggesting that animals are not the only beings conditioned to serve the efficient functioning of capitalist systems. The documentary enriches our understanding of biodiversity and harmony between human and non-human life, while aspiring for the awareness kindled within viewers to permeate their daily existence to ultimately nurture both humanity and our planet. Perhaps the seemingly insignificant act of contemplating a single egg might become the seed of living as part of nature on Earth. (Sung MOON)
