Overview

Yun Suknam, born in 1939, supported her widowed mother and siblings from a young age. By the time she turned 40, she felt suffocated by societal roles and chose to pursue painting, spending all her money on supplies and refusing to quit. As a first-generation feminist artist, she continues to paint in her eighties, proving that art is about perseverance, resilience, and an unbreakable will.

Review

This documentary looks at an artist who is both stylish and worthy of admiration: Yun Suknam, the "godmother of Korean feminist art," who has remained prolifically active well into her eighties. Yun was a stay-at-home mother in her forties when she embarked on an artistic career in a search for meaning in her life. She ushered in new possibilities in Korean art by becoming the first woman to win the Lee Jung-Seob Award. Viewers can hear about how Yun was able to overcome the limitations of the painting medium by using wood for her work, along with the stories behind her creations Sowing Light, which consists of 999 engravings of women, and 1,025 With or Without Person, in which she carved 1,025 abandoned dogs out of wood. The portraits of 100 female independence activists that she has been working on since 2020 leave the viewer in awe at her inexhaustible passion for creation. This film will be a wonderful experience for those who are already aware of Yun Suknam's body of work, and it is also recommended viewing for those who have never heard of the artist before.
