💬 24th Opening Film! Tori and Lokita,

by Jean-Pierre DARDENNE, Luc DARDENNE

Tori and Lokita

The opening film of the 24th JEONJU IFF is 🎬Tori and Lokita. It is a new work by directors Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne, who are respected by filmmakers around the world.

Eleven-year-old Tori and Sixteen-year-old Lokita, from Africa living in Belgium, tell people they are brother and sister even though they are not blood-related. They rely on each other profoundly in this foreign country, where they don’t know anyone, and live a hellish life getting paid for delivering drugs to customers for Betim, who runs a restaurant as cover. Lokita has to send money home to her mom and five siblings in Cameroon, pay the debt to the broker who brought her to Belgium, and earn her own living. While she is even sexually exploited by Betim, Lokita desperately needs a work permit to free herself from this unfortunate reality. Yet, she keeps getting rejected in the visa screening process. Then, Betim suggests he can get her a fake visa if she does what he tells her. She has no choice but to accept his offer, which gradually casts a tragic shadow over Tori and Lokita.

💬 23rd Opening Film, You can also see After Yang!

The start of a film festival is always exciting. Opening films fill our hearts with cinematic excitement, making us wonder. What was last year's opening night film? Here is last year's opening film was just as exciting as this year's when they were released🔥.

After Yang

🎬 23rd JEONJU IFF Opening Film After Yang

Set in the near future, Jake’s family owns an android named Yang who appears Asian. Yang serves as a guardian and surrogate brother to the family’s adopted Chinese daughter Mika for cultural familiarity in her upbringing. One day, the family competes in a virtual dance-off, and Yang stops working after the event. Since Mika heavily relies on him, her father tries hard to repair him. However, because he purchased the android from a reseller, he is not eligible to receive any assistance from the original manufacturer. He is even told to donate the android as “techno-sapiens” to a science and technology museum. Meanwhile, he realizes that Yang, unlike other androids, has a unique feature to store memories. He starts looking into Yang’s memory bank and discovers his personal memories and life which Jake assumed he already knew.

Director Kogonada describes the film as "very personal in that it explores memory, loss, love, and family identity." The film has a unique atmosphere, with detailed production design, music, and cinematography creating an analog atmosphere set in the distant future. After Yang, a static, minimalist sci-fi, plays at this year's Jeonju International Film Festival.
