Re-wind: Korean Film Archive in JEONJU
25th JOENJU IFF X KOFA 50th Anniversary
00:11
KIM Hong-Joon (Director, Korean Film Archive)
00:12
This year, the JEONJU International Film Festival celebrates its 25th anniversary
00:15
and since the Korean Film Archive started in 1974 under the name of “Korean Film Storage”
00:20
we are now celebrating its 50th anniversary.
00:22
That is why the Korean Film Archive and the JEONJU IFF have jointly organized Re-wind: Korean Film Archive in JEONJU.
00:29
The JEONJU IFF presents the alternative characteristic
00:33
and the ability to screen films that are difficult to encounter through a regular distribution network of commercial films
00:38
under quality conditions.
00:40
Since the Korean Film Archive chases the same goal,
00:45
we expect the audiences who visit the JEONJU IFF to be the most fitting for this special exhibition.
00:53
MIN Sungwook (Festival Co-Director, JEONJU Internation Film Festival)
00:54
By hearing their names, you'll know who they are.
00:56
Director Hong Sangsoo, Bong Joon Ho, Ryoo Seungwan, and Jung Jiwoo
01:00
are well-known filmmakers who have received significant recognition.
01:04
There is no need to specify the reason for selections
01:07
since these are the early films of such remarkable directors;
01:10
I believe the audience will agree.
Introductions
4 films selected by Korean Film Archive
01:17
The only film by Park Nam-ok, Korea's first female film director,
01:21
The Widow
will be screened.
01:23
Also, Lee Kangcheon's
Piagol
,
01:25
Kim Sodong's
The Money
,
01:27
and Shin Sang-ok's
The Flower in Hell
will be presented.
01:29
We prepared four works from the 50s and 60s.
Representative films by directors Kim Sooyong and Lee Dooyong.
01:32
Furthermore, two films with special meaning will be screened.
01:36
Firstly, Kim Sooyong's
Mist
.
01:38
Considering that director Park Chan-wook took the motif from
Mist
01:42
of
Decision to Leave
,
01:45
screening the digital version of
Mist
carries significant meaning.
01:49
The last work is Lee Dooyong's
The Hut
.
01:51
It is one of his representative works from the 1980s, which was screened at the Venice IFF.
01:56
Our archive has also recently restored this film,
02:00
and the audience can learn about the level of restoration technology of the Korea Film Archive.
02:04
Unfortunately, directors Kim Sooyong
02:10
and Lee Dooyong recently passed away,
02:14
also the actor Namkoong Won who played a major role, too.
02:17
Even though it was not what we originally planned,
02:18
screening their works will also have the meaning of a memorial screening.
02:21
Therefore, the six films from the 1950s to the 1980s
02:26
The Widow
,
Piagol
,
The Money
,
The Flower in Hell
,
Mist
, and
The Hut
02:31
are the classic movies the Korean Film Archive recommends for this year's JEONJU IFF.
4 films selected by JEONJU International Film Festival
02:37
From the current perspective,
02:39
in the case of
Virgin Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors
02:40
The chemistry between actor Jung Bosuk and Lee Eunjoo is exceptional.
02:43
Lee Eunjoo's character was very unique and exciting.
02:47
It was not commonly seen in previous films.
02:52
Lee Eunjoo's passionate acting at the time,
02:55
the audience can witness once again.
02:57
In the case of director Bong Joon Ho's
Barking Dogs Never Bite
,
02:58
similarly, the audience can experience the freshness of actors Bae Doo-na and Lee Sung-jae.
03:05
You can enjoy the acting of Byun Hee-bong, who is like director Bong's persona,
03:10
and other actors, too.
03:13
Looking back, director Bong has already shown the work reminiscent of his later work,
Parasite
(2019)
03:18
already in
Barking Dogs Never Bite
,
03:21
so thinking about these points while watching the film may help you find more interesting points.
03:26
In director Ryoo Seungwan's
Die Bad
,
03:30
he combined the previously shot shorts in 16mm and newly filmed ones,
03:34
and created the feature-length film.
03:36
He visited the JEONJU IFF with it for the first time.
03:39
How realistically and explicitly the violence was depicted shocked me at that time.
03:48
Additionally, I hope the audience will pay attention
03:50
to the excellent and fresh performance
03:54
of actor Ryoo Seungbum in
Die Bad
.
03:57
Blossom Again
is directed by Jung Jiwoo, and
04:01
he is known for his unconventional themes.
04:05
So
Eungyo
(2012) may be a famous film to many,
04:09
but
Blossom Again
takes a somewhat opposite place.
04:13
It is a love story between a female teacher and a male high school freshman.
04:18
It is remarkable work that is dealing with such an unconventional subject,
04:23
so I would like to recommend it to you.
04:28
Especially, for this special screening,
04:30
Virgin Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors
by Hong Sangsoo,
04:33
which was screened at the 1st JEONJU IFF,
04:34
Barking Dogs Never Bite
by Bong Joon Ho
04:36
and
Blossom Again
by Jung Jiwoo
04:38
ave been remastered by the Korean Film Archive,
04:41
to 4K digital format and will be presented in JEONJU IFF
04:45
for the first time.
04:47
We're very grateful for that.
Keyword for the Special Section
Keyword - Joy
04:53
Discover, excavation, restoration
04:58
But I would like to recommend
05:00
the more fundamental keyword, joy.
05:04
Classic cinemas may seem a bit difficult and stiff,
05:08
and you may feel like you need to approach them with respect.
05:11
However, the makers of these films
05:13
studied how to entertain the audience,
05:17
so if today's viewers approach these movies with an open mind and attitude of enjoying them,
05:22
then they may gain much more from the films.
05:26
I chose the keyword joy for this reason.
Keyword - Review
05:32
I want to choose the word review as a keyword.
05:34
Although these movies have already passed,
05:36
as we watch them again,
05:38
we have a chance to review the work again.
05:42
And allowing us to discover how we perceived before and now.
05:46
Because I think it is a valuable opportunity,
05:50
I want to call it a review.
To the audience
05:55
The JEONJU IFF has a wide range of moviegoers.
05:58
If there is one common attitude of the attendees that can be defined,
06:04
it is the spirit of adventure.
06:06
These days, it is easy to watch a movie through OTT platforms or other channels.
06:12
However, watching films in theaters with people who share similar tastes and motivations
06:18
and being able to empathize with them is considered essential.
06:22
Since the JEONJU IFF provides an adventurous movie-viewing experience,
06:27
Korean classic films would be fascinating subjects for such adventures.
06:33
Korean classic films are both close and distant, familiar yet unfamiliar,
06:38
so I encourage you to take a risk and explore the charm of Korean classic films.
06:45
As we all know, the JEONJU IFF is known for screening alternatives and independence of cinema,
06:49
so even the directors and actors appearing for the first time can be
06:51
somewhat unfamiliar or lesser known to us.
06:56
But many of them have now become masters
06:58
and globally recognized.
07:01
Viewing these works from such a perspective again
07:04
may lead to participation in the film festival with much more affection.
