Re-wind: Korean Film Archive in JEONJU
25th JOENJU IFF X KOFA 50th Anniversary 00:11KIM Hong-Joon (Director, Korean Film Archive) 00:12This year, the JEONJU International Film Festival celebrates its 25th anniversary 00:15and since the Korean Film Archive started in 1974 under the name of “Korean Film Storage” 00:20we are now celebrating its 50th anniversary. 00:22That is why the Korean Film Archive and the JEONJU IFF have jointly organized Re-wind: Korean Film Archive in JEONJU. 00:29The JEONJU IFF presents the alternative characteristic 00:33and the ability to screen films that are difficult to encounter through a regular distribution network of commercial films 00:38under quality conditions. 00:40Since the Korean Film Archive chases the same goal, 00:45we expect the audiences who visit the JEONJU IFF to be the most fitting for this special exhibition. 00:53MIN Sungwook (Festival Co-Director, JEONJU Internation Film Festival) 00:54By hearing their names, you'll know who they are. 00:56Director Hong Sangsoo, Bong Joon Ho, Ryoo Seungwan, and Jung Jiwoo 01:00are well-known filmmakers who have received significant recognition. 01:04There is no need to specify the reason for selections 01:07since these are the early films of such remarkable directors; 01:10I believe the audience will agree.

4 films selected by Korean Film Archive 01:17The only film by Park Nam-ok, Korea's first female film director, 01:21The Widow will be screened. 01:23Also, Lee Kangcheon's Piagol, 01:25Kim Sodong's The Money, 01:27and Shin Sang-ok's The Flower in Hell will be presented. 01:29We prepared four works from the 50s and 60s.

Representative films by directors Kim Sooyong and Lee Dooyong. 01:32Furthermore, two films with special meaning will be screened. 01:36Firstly, Kim Sooyong's Mist. 01:38Considering that director Park Chan-wook took the motif from Mist 01:42of Decision to Leave, 01:45screening the digital version of Mist carries significant meaning. 01:49The last work is Lee Dooyong's The Hut. 01:51It is one of his representative works from the 1980s, which was screened at the Venice IFF. 01:56Our archive has also recently restored this film, 02:00and the audience can learn about the level of restoration technology of the Korea Film Archive. 02:04Unfortunately, directors Kim Sooyong 02:10and Lee Dooyong recently passed away, 02:14also the actor Namkoong Won who played a major role, too. 02:17Even though it was not what we originally planned, 02:18screening their works will also have the meaning of a memorial screening. 02:21Therefore, the six films from the 1950s to the 1980s 02:26The Widow, Piagol, The Money, The Flower in Hell, Mist, and The Hut 02:31are the classic movies the Korean Film Archive recommends for this year's JEONJU IFF.

4 films selected by JEONJU International Film Festival 02:37From the current perspective, 02:39in the case of Virgin Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors 02:40The chemistry between actor Jung Bosuk and Lee Eunjoo is exceptional. 02:43Lee Eunjoo's character was very unique and exciting. 02:47It was not commonly seen in previous films. 02:52Lee Eunjoo's passionate acting at the time, 02:55the audience can witness once again. 02:57In the case of director Bong Joon Ho's Barking Dogs Never Bite, 02:58similarly, the audience can experience the freshness of actors Bae Doo-na and Lee Sung-jae. 03:05You can enjoy the acting of Byun Hee-bong, who is like director Bong's persona, 03:10and other actors, too. 03:13Looking back, director Bong has already shown the work reminiscent of his later work, Parasite (2019) 03:18already in Barking Dogs Never Bite, 03:21so thinking about these points while watching the film may help you find more interesting points. 03:26In director Ryoo Seungwan's Die Bad, 03:30he combined the previously shot shorts in 16mm and newly filmed ones, 03:34and created the feature-length film. 03:36He visited the JEONJU IFF with it for the first time. 03:39How realistically and explicitly the violence was depicted shocked me at that time. 03:48Additionally, I hope the audience will pay attention 03:50to the excellent and fresh performance 03:54of actor Ryoo Seungbum in Die Bad. 03:57Blossom Again is directed by Jung Jiwoo, and 04:01he is known for his unconventional themes. 04:05So Eungyo (2012) may be a famous film to many, 04:09but Blossom Again takes a somewhat opposite place. 04:13It is a love story between a female teacher and a male high school freshman. 04:18It is remarkable work that is dealing with such an unconventional subject, 04:23so I would like to recommend it to you. 04:28Especially, for this special screening, 04:30Virgin Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors by Hong Sangsoo, 04:33which was screened at the 1st JEONJU IFF, 04:34Barking Dogs Never Bite by Bong Joon Ho 04:36and Blossom Again by Jung Jiwoo 04:38ave been remastered by the Korean Film Archive, 04:41to 4K digital format and will be presented in JEONJU IFF 04:45for the first time. 04:47We're very grateful for that.
