My Missing Aunt begins with a confession about director Yang Juyeon’s family history. Born as the first daughter in Yang's family, she thought that as much as she is used to having her younger brother at the center of the family, she had no place in the family. It is not difficult to find this kind of “family scene” in Korea where everything is centered around the son. Then one night her father confessed about the existence of his older sister, the aunt who disappeared 40 years ago. She knew for the first time about her. In 1975, aunt took her own life ahead of college graduation. After discovering a photo of her aunt left by the grandmother, she created this film to “fight against fear”. Through the journey of finding people who still remember her aunt and seeking the reason for her death, she tries to discover not only the missing place of her aunt, but also discovering her own place, which was always one the side in the family.
